Cosmic Thoughts – Lago Grey
There are just a few places in the world adequately free from light pollution as to be able to enjoy the full beauty of the stars. Not one or two specs, not the brightest constellations, but to be able to see the vastness of our arm of the Milky Way, wrapping around the black blanket of the Earth. Patagonia is one of those places.
The night transforms the landscape. A super-stillness and silence grips far better than the frost to the ground. There are mysteries when you look up, and familiar flickers towards the horizon.
I don’t often share the process of painting as intimately as in a video, but in this case I actually found it liberating. I could watch it back and recall the colours, brushstrokes and even the brushes I used, and documenting the work helps you appreciate it more.
I’ve been desperate to paint this scene – and many others from my trip to Patagonia, but somehow this piece has me stopping, and starting. I can’t bear to throw it away though, I guess I just have to keep battling the little painting demon of self-doubt, and complete what will be the first cosmic painting painted truly from my own experiences.
